BIRTHDAY SUITe
“You are cordially invited to attend BIRTHDAY SUITe by Paul Outlaw: six short pieces, in which the acclaimed writer-performer looks forward and back, as we humans often do on the anniversary of our birth. There will be a fresh look at some past work, sketches of future projects and rants about the state of the union in a celebration of life and death and the body’s impermanence...and there will be adult beverages.”
Taking place a few days before Outlaw’s actual birthday, BIRTHDAY SUITe was a party with the guest of honor offering his performance as a gift to those in attendance. The audience members’ gift was their presence and the price of admission. Proceeds from the box office were donated to El Serrucho, an emergency relief fund launched by Beta-Local, a non-profit arts organization based in San Juan, on behalf of residents of Puerto Rico affected by the hurricanes of 2017.
BIRTHDAY SUITe mixes elements of theater, standup, spoken word and concert. The title is a play on words referring to (among other things) the pure, unclothed state in which we enter the world; a musical work consisting of compositions to be played in succession... and a group of people in attendance on a monarch.
